Pulling one’s life back up from rock bottom can be difficult, to say the least. It’s well known that getting through the withdrawals of coming off drugs can be painful and hard to overcome. What is less talked about is after getting clean where there is a struggle moving forward due to living in the past.
Addicts often find themselves unable to move forward and fixated on how things should have gone or how bad they messed up their life. They live their life through a fog of everything they’ve ever done wrong.
It is for this reason, each person who goes through Narconon works through what they have done in the past in order to clean their conscience. This is to enable them to move forward without the painful memories of their mistakes constantly haunting them.
Here is what one student had to say after completing that part of the Narconon program.
“I feel the success I got from taking responsibility for how I was living my life made me realize not only how destructive I was to my health and survival but how I affected those around me; my family, friends, and groups I am associated with (work/school). I have a better understanding of why these people would be hesitant toward me and treat me the way they did. I am actually surprised they treated me that well, because if someone did those things to me, I would have cut them off.
This process has helped me develop a new love and respect for those people and myself. It has also really shown me and made it a reality for me how important it is I change my life for the better no matter how hard it gets. Because reflecting back on what I had done, I can see that a destructive way of living will only lead me to spend the rest of my life in prison or wind up dead.
That is definitely not what I want for my future.
It has also given me a feeling of relief because I don’t have to hold onto secrets or the bad things I have done in my life. Now I feel I have been given a clean slate and have been given another chance/opportunity to live my life happily and honestly.”
